Damage to the oral mucosa occurs primarily in older dogs and cats due to inflammation of the gums (gingivitis), which is manifested in reddish and bleeding gums and bad breath (halitosis). Gum disease is caused by the deposition of dental plaque on the tooth surface, which changes into tartar over time.

To prevent the development of periodontitis and consequent tooth loss, tartar should be regularly removed by a veterinarian. With this procedure, it is necessary to clean the space under the gums, which means that the gums may bleed after treatment.

Cuts in periodontal tissues also occur during play or when matter becomes stuck in the interdental space. Larger wounds in particular require specialised treatment, during which it is suitable to use antiseptics with active substances accelerating the healing process.

Causes of injury in an animal’s mouth

  • surgery (removal of tartar, overgrown gums or tumours, dental extraction, treatment of oronasal fistulas, etc.)
  • sharps injuries (bone, wood, metal objects, awns)
  • occlusion defects
  • injuries
  • bite wounds
  • burns

Gum treatment using Dentaren

Dentaren is a comprehensive veterinary product in gel form that promotes the healing of the oral cavity. The use of antibiotics can be avoided with Dentaren’s antimicrobial effects.

Dentaren is a useful supplement in the treatment of all minor injuries of the mucous membranes in the oral cavity, including treatment following the removal of tartar. Dentaren prevents the infection of a gum injury after veterinary procedure.

Dentaren forms a protective film to keep active substances in the wound. This helps to promote rapid healing and avoid microbial infection.

Hyaluronic acid and octenidine in Dentaren

Dentaren contains hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the extracellular matrix of connective tissue. Hyaluronic acid has the ability to bind water and accelerate the healing process by facilitating the migration of epithelial cells. With injuries of periodontal tissues, hyaluronic acid also helps to stop bleeding and reduce the intensity of scarring.

Octenidine is an effective antiseptic active against a wide range of bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses even in very low concentrations. Octenidine acts faster than other antiseptics (such as chlorhexidine, PVP-iodine, triclosan, polyhexanide). Octenidine is non-toxic to the organism and is not soluble in water, so it is not absorbed into the body.

How to apply Dentaren

Apply Dentaren directly to the injured area thinly because animals will lick off gel if there are excessive quantities. To enhance the effect of the product, for half an hour after application deny the animal access to feed, water or objects which could cause the mechanical removal of the gel.

Apply the gel to the wound two to three times daily until complete healed.
